DECEMBER

From 13th to 16th

“Virgen de la Puerta” Celebration

The history of this celebration goes back to the 16th Century when vandals tried to enter the city.

The townspeople placed the image of the Virgin Mary at the town gate and the looters withdrew. Since then she had a new name, The Virgin of the Gateway, later changed to the Virgin of the Doorway.

At the height of festivities, from the 13th to the 15th of December, the statue of the Virgin is taken from her place in the church and paraded before the crowds of parishioners who sing, pray, and make votive offerings.
